The group of islands close to the Ecuadorian coast got his fame thanks to the British scientist Charles Darwin whose theories got highly influenced by his experience and studies during his visit of what we now know as the Galapagos Islands in 1835 . Our today's knowledge isn't so much related to Darwin anymore since lots of documental videos about them have been shown on TV. Typical for the islands are the giant tortoises, iguanas on land and marine iguanas which diverged from the land iguanas some 8–10 million years ago. The islands' ecosystem was unfortunately damaged by human influence but thanks to some environment projects in the early 20th century no further negative impacts were caused so that the visitor still has the unique experience of observing animal species who have walked on this planet long before the first homo sapiens was seen at the horizon.

Island hopping from Santa Cruz
We recommend this option to travellers who get seasick, but who have not experienced problems with daily boat trips. Also recommendable if you like staying in a hotel rather than being on a boat all time.
From the "base" on Santa Cruz (where one species of the famous marine iguana lives) all daily excursions to the other Galapagos Islands can be done with ease, and in the late afternoon you come back to your hotel and enjoy the island's atmosphere.

- Bus- and ferry transfer to port Ayora, Santa Cruz
- Visit of Charles Darwin Research Station where the oldest and biggest tortoises of the region can be seen

TAG 5 Santa Cruz - Bartolomé - Santa Cruz .........................................B-L-D
- Full day excursion starts with a boat trip from Santa Cruz to Bartolome Island, 2.5 hrs
- 15 to 20 minutes hike on a walkway and in a landscape formed by vulvanic activity to the highest point of the island. From the top you have a 360° view of Bartolomé, the Pinnacle Rock (most photographed place in Galápagos), Santiago and other islands.
- explore Sullivan bay by walking another walkway on the lava field to get deeper into the "walking-on-the-moon-feeling"
- opportunity to swim and snorkle close to pinguins and turtles
- return to Santa Cruz, 2.5 hr
